PBS KVIE President and General Manager David Lowe is featured on the cover of this week’s Sacramento Business Journal, along with a 2-page Executive Profile exploring the leadership philosophy behind the station’s growth and its expansion into local journalism.
The cover story, “Going Against the Trend,” examines how KVIE has chosen to expand its service to the Sacramento region at a time when public media faces the loss of federal funding and local news coverage continues to shrink.
The profile traces KVIE’s financial transformation under Lowe’s leadership, from less than $2 million in reserves when he became president and general manager in 2008 to nearly $50 million today. That financial strength allowed the station to launch Abridged, its nonprofit digital newsroom, in September 2025. After only three months of service, Abridged won more California Journalism Awards than any local newsroom.
“Nonprofit is a tax status, not a business plan,” Lowe told the Journal, describing the mindset shift he considers his most consequential leadership decision.
The article also highlights how KVIE preserved its entire workforce during the pandemic while other organizations announced layoffs, and how the station’s long-practiced financial discipline turned what Lowe calls a rainy-day fund into an opportunity fund for new initiatives that serve the community.
Looking ahead, Lowe told the Journal he expects KVIE’s next phase to extend beyond traditional television, with Abridged growing alongside children’s educational programming, local productions, and community events.
The feature concludes with a reflection on legacy. “The longer my tenure runs, the more I measure successful leadership by a simple test: KVIE needing me less,” Lowe said. “The institution belongs to the community.”
