Summary
Plays a critical role in PBS KVIE’s efforts to produce high-quality, impactful news content that engages and informs our community. This role will develop and oversee the organization’s ground-breaking citizen journalism program. Recruits, trains, and manages a team of citizen journalists and content creators to provide PBS KVIE’s audience with untold stories from communities across the Sacramento region. Essential Functions
- Acts as creator, editor and project manager to develop and oversee a citizen reporting pipeline that identifies, trains and deploys citizen journalists.
- Works with PBS KVIE’s community advisory panels to identify and collaborate with community partners, including creative organizations, schools and journalism programs, to create a recruitment structure that identifies community journalists for the program.
- Creates a multi-week training regimen and recruit journalists and others in the community to develop curriculum, teach courses and mentor emerging journalists upon completion of the program and certification.
- Identifies coverage topics that focus on news deserts and underserved parts of the coverage area, including communities of color, rural communities, immigrant communities, neighborhoods facing food and economic insecurity and business districts in which government and/or institutional investment is insufficient.
- In conjunction with Audience Engagement Editor and News Editor, develops strategy for integrating content into relevant publishing platforms, including PBS KVIE’s digital and visual news presentations.
- Oversees project budget, including stipends for citizen journalists and mentors.
- Ensures all content aligns with PBS KVIE’s mission and editorial standards of accuracy, impartiality, and inclusivity.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be mission-driven and passionate about the role of public media.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Effective and proactive communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively with diverse stakeholders as a team.
- Positively and professionally represents PBS KVIE throughout the community.
- Familiarity and experience with training materials, academic approaches and evaluation structures, ideally in the journalism field.
- Ability to coach contributors on digital-first storytelling formats for the news services’ website and social media.
- Strong editorial judgment with a commitment to journalistic integrity.
- Deep familiarity with the Sacramento region or Northern California’s concerns, communities, and landscape.
Education / Experience
- BA/BS degree in Journalism or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of five years of newsroom experience.
- Professional project management experience preferred.
Special Conditions
- Must have a valid California driver’s license and meet insurance standards.
- Available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Travel required.
