PATRICIA ALTSCHUL - Small Works

February 6, 2018 – April 6, 2018

Artist Statement

The patterns of thought that illuminate a face, animate a body, or cause it to be still and in repose, glimpsed moments of an indeterminate quiet, and the unexpected and revealing moment that might be a window into the wholly private worlds of thought belonging to each of us, these are what I hope to illustrate in my work. Images recovered by an archeologist of the soul.

Two poems hang on my studio wall, I read them often.

"Vermeer" by Wislawa Szymborskas
"So long as that woman from the Rijksmuseum
in painted quiet and concentration
keeps pouring milk day after day
from the pitcher to the bowl
the World hasn't earned
the world's end."

And a stanza from "Thirteen Ways to View a Blackbird" by Wallace Stevens

"I do not know which to prefer,
The beauty of inflections
Or the beauty of innuendoes,
The blackbird whistling
Or just after."
