DTV - Tomorrow's TV Today - A wealth of information about digital television from the FCC. This should be your first stop for information and news on navigating the digital television transition.

Did you know that June 12, 2009, is the date set by Congress for all TV stations to stop analog broadcasts? After that date, consumers with analog sets will need to obtain a separate converter box to watch over-the-air TV. Beginning in 2008, consumers with analog TVs receiving over-the-air broadcasts will be able to obtain two coupons worth $40 each towards the purchase of converter boxes from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). For more information on the digital transition, visit www.dtv.gov.

If you use an antenna with your analog television, you CAN KEEP your current TV set.

If you haven’t made the switch, here is what you must do to continue watching television.

  • Purchase a digital converter box and connect it to your TV and antenna. To sign up for a $40 coupon, call 1-888-DTV-2009.
  • Purchase a television with a built-in digital tuner and connect it to an antenna.
  • You need to upgrade your indoor or outdoor antenna to a combination VHF/UHF antenna to achieve the best reception.
  • For cable and satellite viewers no action is necessary, unless you choose to convert to OTA then a converter box and antenna may be necessary.

The 4 Rs of Digital Television

If you are already watching digital, there are a few things you should know.

  • RESCAN, CHANNEL SEARCH, OR ADD CHANNELS to your digital television and/or converter boxes so you receive all the new channels that are available.
  • RECYCLE used televisions (cell phones too) at an official e-waste disposal site. It is not only environmentally conscious, it’s the law.
  • REMEMBER that your neighbor or family member may need help. Check to see if others are digital ready.
  • RECEPTION will vary depending on the type and strength of your
antenna; however a combination VHF/UHF indoor or outdoor antenna will provide the best reception. Pointing it towards the KVIE transmitter in Walnut Grove is helpful. Learn about antenna reception by visiting KVIE’s DTV website and click on “Choosing an Antenna.

When purchasing a digital converter box or television, consider an energy efficient model. Look for the ENERGY STAR logo that identifies the high efficiency models. ENGERGY STAR television models can save energy in standby mode (off) as well as when they are on. Some stores also use a “Save More” sticker to identify energy efficient models.

Converter boxes are anticipated to cost approximately $60, but as low at $39.99. The federal government is offering households up to two $40 coupons towards the purchase of a converter box(es). To register for a coupon, click the "TV Converter Box Coupon Program" image below.
