From Vienna – The New Year’s Celebration 2010
Continuing its long-standing holiday tradition, Great Performances returns to the stately splendor of Vienna’s Musikverein for its 26th Annual New Year’s Day Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. Stage and screen legend Julie Andrews returns as host to welcome the new year, with Georges Prêtre leading the Vienna Philharmonic in a festive selection of Strauss family favorites.

With remembrance and great respect, KVIE honors Martin Luther King, Jr. and his profound contributions to progressive civil rights. King relentlessly and nonviolently pursued the then-radical idea of racial equality among Americans. His efforts to influence the government with this idea revolutionized state and federal laws. Don’t miss KVIE’s special programming this month, which shows how others followed in his footsteps.
Come Walk in My Shoes
Come Walk in My Shoes provides a fresh, first-person perspective on the nonviolent protests that challenged segregation laws in the South and prompted the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965. During the film, Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) leads colleagues from the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, religious leaders and others on an emotional pilgrimage to sacred sites of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Civil Rights Era is one of the most tumultuous times in American history. African Americans in particular began demanding equality in education, housing, and employment. This program explores how the civil rights era affected change in the Sacramento region.

In Colorblind, a group of former grade-school classmates reunite and discover the profound impact their beloved African American teacher, Mr. Bell, had on each of their lives. Colorblind captures the emotional reunion of the classmates — now in their mid-40s — as they reflect upon the turbulent Civil Rights Era and the humble man whose timeless lessons of love and nonviolence touched their hearts and minds and shaped their young spirits.

This historical biography traces the life of Lawrence Douglas Wilder, the first elected African American governor in the United States. Often flamboyant, and known as a shrewd and ruthless politician, Wilder was unafraid to take controversial positions. Wilder: An American First explores how one man became one of the world's most powerful black leaders without ever embracing the evangelical messages popular among other African American politicians.

65TH Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation: January 27 9
On this date in 1945, Soviet soldiers set prisoners free from the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Please join us as we honor the memory of the 1.1 million people who died at this camp, and help us celebrate the triumphs of those who survived.
Swimming in Auschwitz
Swimming in Auschwitz interweaves the stories of six Jewish women imprisoned inside the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during the Holocaust. The women maintained a spiritual resistance against their Nazi aggressors through prayer, community, music, and even humor. They speak of camp families and faith, uplifting one another while trying to retain their humanity. Their compelling testimonials reveal the power of laughter and community, even in the face of evil.
