Nutrition
The eating habits children learn while they are young stay with them for life. Give your child a healthy start by using these resources to teach them about nutrition and good eating habits.
Food is fun and learning about food is fun too. Eating foods from the Food Guide Pyramid will help you be healthy.
Make sure your children are getting the nutrients and activity they need. Learn a variety of ways to stay healthy.
Help children distinguish between healthy and unhealthy snacks. Learn a few tips for evaluating appropriate snacks and portion sizes and getting kids interested in nutritious snack foods at different ages.
Calcium is an important nutrient children need. It is found mainly in milk and dairy products and in dark green, leafy vegetables and foods with added calcium. Learn about calcium.
It is a good idea to keep caffeine consumption to a minimum, especially in younger children. Learn about caffeine control.
Water is the most necessary nutrient of them all - so necessary that people can't survive for more than a few days without it. More than half of the weight of your body is water - if you weigh 60 pounds, fewer than 25 of those pounds are minerals and other solid stuff. The remaining pounds are water. Learn about water.
More healthy eating ideas:
- Offer 5 cups of fruits and vegetables every day
- Limit consumption of juice drinks and sodas
- Offer your child water to drink
- Offer more often:
- Chicken, turkey, fish or beans
- Nonfat milk or yogurt
- Baked, broiled or steamed foods
- Bread, tortillas, rice or pasta
- Offer less often:
- Fried foods
- Hot dogs, bacon or sausages
