About the Program:

A Place of Our Own and the Spanish-language companion, Los Niños en Su Casa, are daily talk shows devoted to the needs of caregivers of pre-Kindergarten aged children. The shows use a variety of techniques to help caregivers enhance the learning experiences of the children in their care, and to help prepare the children for entrance into formal school settings. Through fun and interactive demonstrations using music, arts and crafts and more, the shows will offer advice on important topics such as literacy, child nutrition, safety, discipline and socialization. Experts in early childhood development and other special guests will join show hosts in-studio. Debi Gutierrez, former teacher, stand-up comedian, wife and mother of three, is the host of A Place of Our Own. Los Niños en Su Casa is hosted by actress-singer-dancer-mother, Alina Rosario.

Recognition of Childcare Providers:

Each week A Place of Our Own recognizes a California Caregiver who provides exemplary and innovative services to the children in our communities. The Childcare Provider of the Week goes above and beyond the normal call of duty. KVIE is excited to have two of our own chosen as Child Care Provider of the Week: Rosemarie Peebles of Sacramento in 2005 and Becky Nuñez of Stockton in 2006.

Rosemarie Peebles says she became a child care provider because she wanted to stay home with her children. She quit her job in a doctor’s office to care for her own child and was then asked to take care of a patient's newborn child. That eventually evolved into a child care business. With 17 years of experience running her own home-based child care program, Rosemarie has also trained other providers as part of the West Ed PITC (Programs for Infants, Toddlers and Child Care providers) providing appropriate ways to effectively run their family child care. Rosemarie says every child deserves to be loved, and she wants those in her care to know that she will always be a voice for them and an advocate for their needs.

Only nine years ago, Becky Nuñez, mother of five, was diagnosed with throat cancer and was told she might lose her voice forever. But after overcoming one of the most difficult challenges of her life, she found a way to truly share her voice – with the children in her community. In time, Becky followed her heart and opened Honey Bear Child Care in her very own home. Besides starting her home-based preschool program at Honey Bear, she also began to care for children with special needs. Becky's determination to be an advocate for the children in her care has now made her an important voice in her community.
